Institutions such as Northwestern University, the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania are partnering with Sermo to conduct epidemiological investigations, study how new technologies can be used to gather and analyze information, and investigate the latest medical trends and events. By collaborating with Sermo, these partners have accessed a new research tool, opening the door to more efficient research, and increased opportunities for grant funding and research publications.
Our Current Strategic Partners
American Medical Association
The American Medical Association has partnered with Sermo to create a direct line of communication between US physicians and AMA leadership. As such, AMA leadership, including the President of the AMA, regularly interacts on Sermo to gain insight on grass-roots views pertaining to a wide range of policy, reform and practice issues. The partnership includes several initiatives around the AMA’s publications, including a ’Discuss on Sermo” link that allows physicians nationwide to immediately discuss, survey, and corroborate opinions about the latest health care news and research.
Nature Publishing Group
In this collaboration, NPG is adding ‘Discuss on Sermo’ links to the online versions
of articles in 12 of its leading medical journals, including Nature Medicine, Nature
Clinical Practice Cardiovascular Medicine and Leukemia. To best facilitate
information sharing, NPG will make full text articles from a selection of its medical
journals freely available to all registered users of Sermo. NPG’s partnership with Sermo is consistent with its aims to use the internet to improve research and communication, and its specific focus on improving medical research.
CrossRef
CrossRef is an independent membership association, founded and directed
by publishers. CrossRef's mandate is to connect users to primary
research content, by enabling publishers to work collectively. CrossRef
is also the official DOIR link registration agency for scholarly and
professional publications. It operates a cross-publisher citation
linking system that allows a researcher to click on a reference citation
on one publisher's platform and link directly to the cited content on
another publisher's platform, subject to the target publisher's access
control practices. CrossRef's citation-linking network today covers
millions of articles and other content items from several hundred
scholarly and professional publishers.
ReachMD
On Sermo, US physicians are able to discuss and debate ReachMD’s innovative broadcast medical news (XM Satellite Radio Channel 157). “It’s a natural fit. Both companies offer an innovative forum for physicians to engage one another and to be heard. By combining broadcast media and social networking, physicians can now listen to a segment on ReachMD, then immediately discuss the content with colleagues. This has not been possible until now,” said Dr. David Preskill, Founder and Chief Medical Officer of ReachMD.
University of Michigan
The University of Michigan’s School of Information Sciences is studying how
social network theory can be used to get the highest-quality information from
users in communities such as Sermo. This investigation is being lead by P.I.
Dr. Paul Resnick, an expert on social network theory whose research includes ongoing analysis of ranking and rating systems on eBay and Slashdot. The results of Dr. Resnick's research will be used to refine Sermo and other online technologies in the near future.
Northwestern University
Sermo partner Northwestern University has created a state-of-the-art
pharmacovigilance network that polls a network of physicians to monitor
adverse events. P.I., Dr. Charles Bennett, is leading an investigation
comparing the Sermo community to more traditional adverse event monitoring networks, most notably Northwestern’s RADAR program.
