SERMO is first a virtual doctors’ lounge” where doctors candidly share their true feelings about their profession and lives, and second a place where doctors learn from one another by asking real life questions, advice and second opinions about medicine.

Your information is the information that's required when You register for the site, as well as the information You choose to share.

When You register for SERMO, You are required to give Your contact information (such as name, address, birth date, physician license information, medical school, institutional affiliations, e-mail address and similar information).

Once a registered member of SERMO, You may provide additional information in Your personal profile which describes You, including Your credentials, professional experiences, academic background and biography. Providing additional information in Your personal profile beyond what is required at registration is entirely optional and can be updated or removed by You at any time.

We receive additional digital data about You, when You start using SERMO:
  • We receive data to verify identities to ensure that members are doctors
  • We receive data about You whenever You use SERMO (such as visiting a SERMO page, sending or receiving a message, click on or otherwise interact with content).
  • When You post things such as articles, comments and photos on SERMO, we may receive additional related data (or metadata), such as the time, date, and place You took the photo.
  • We receive data from or about the computer, mobile phone, or other devices You use to access SERMO or install SERMO apps. This may include network and communication information, such as Your IP address or mobile phone number, and other information like Your internet service, operating system, location, the type (including identifiers) of the device or browser You use, or the pages You visit.
  • We may obtain data from our affiliates or our advertising partners, customers and other third parties that help us (or them) deliver sponsored content, understand online activity, and generally improving Your SERMO experience.

2. How we use and share Your information

Within SERMO, doctors are free to talk openly with other doctors about everything that’s important to them, from the business to the practice of medicine. It’s a fun, safe, relaxing place where doctors can be anonymous and speak without fear of repercussions.

Whether you are participating in SERMOresearch or discussing real-world medicine via SERMOsays, we ensure your opinion will remain anonymous..

SERMO is free and we want to make sure it remains this way for a long time. Organizations seeking physician expertise, such as pharmaceutical companies, medical device firms, and biotechs, underwrite the market research and sponsorship opportunities within our site and help us to pay for the delivery of SERMO to You.

We may direct You to pages which contain commercial content or You may be presented with the opportunity to engage with sponsored content, such as at the conclusion of a SERMOresearch program. We may then provide our partners with engagement effectiveness metrics that include the sharing of some minimal personally identifiable information (“PII”) for performance assessment purposes. To protect the anonymous nature of our physician conversations, we will clearly identify commercial content with logos or with words such as “SERMO Client”, “From Industry”, “sponsored polls” or “sponsored page” or other clear identifiers, prior to Your engagement. SERMO WILL NOT ENGAGE IN DIRECT MARKETING AND WILL NOT PERMIT CONTACT INFORMATION TO BE USED BY THIRD PARTIES FOR DIRECT MARKETING.

The information provided at registration is used for verification and to contact You about SERMO. All of Your professional information will be authenticated against a third party provider.

2a. Use of Personal Health Information

SERMO does not collect personal health information about individuals. SERMO does not collect or maintain information that would associate a submission with a specific patient or individual. So please ensure that you do not disclose anything that would allow a patient to be identified. Note also that SERMO does not possess a data based key to re-identify patient data.

2b. Sale of Assets, Merger, Acquisition, Bankruptcy

Information collected from You may be transferred to a third party as a result of a sale or acquisition, merger or bankruptcy involving SERMO.

2c. Cookies 

A cookie is a small piece of data that is sent to Your browser from a Web server and stored on Your computer's hard drive. A cookie can not be used to read data off Your hard disk nor can read cookie files created by other sites. The use of a cookie is in no way linked to any PII you provided while on the Site. SERMO maintains a strict "No-Spam" policy, which means that SERMO does not intend to sell, rent or otherwise give Your e-mail address to a third party without Your consent.

4. Correcting Your information

4a. Correction of Personal Information

If Your personal information changes (such as address or payment information), or if You no longer desire to use this Site, You can update Your profile on the Profile pages of the Site. SERMO will endeavor to correct, update or remove Your personal data provided to SERMO.

4b. Notification of Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy at any time, with or without advance notice. In the event of any change in the way we treat Your personally identifiable information, or in the Privacy Policy document itself, we will display a notice on the SERMO website ( or send You an email, so that You may review the changed terms prior to continuing to use the Site.
