Nasonex contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate, which is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. It is formulated as a nasal spray with a dosage strength of 50 mcg per spray. The spray includes inactive ingredients such as benzalkonium chloride, citric acid, glycerin, and several forms of cellulose. Nasonex is designed to be administered via a metered-dose manual pump spray into the nasal passages.

How should I use this medication?

This medication is for use in the nose. Take it as directed on your prescription label at the same time every day. Do not use it more often than directed. Make sure that you are using your nasal spray correctly. Ask you care team if you have any questions.

A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.

Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While it may be prescribed for children as young as 2 years for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not use double or extra doses.

Where should I keep my medication?

Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Store this medication at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Protect from light.

Get rid of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medication?

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:

• Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Crusting or sores inside the nose
• Frequent or severe nosebleeds
• Low adrenal gland function—nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, unusual weakness or fatigue, dizziness
• Sudden eye pain or change in vision such as blurry vision, seeing halos around lights, vision loss
• Thrush—white patches in the nose or mouth
• Whistling through one or both nostrils that does not go away

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):

• Change in sense of smell
• Change in taste
• Headache
• Irritation inside the nose or throat
• Nosebleed

What should I tell my care team before I take this medication?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• Infection, such as tuberculosis, herpes, or fungal infection
• Recent surgery or injury of nose or sinuses
• Taking corticosteroids by mouth
• An unusual or allergic reaction to mometasone, other corticosteroids, medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• Breast-feeding

What may interact with this medication?

Interactions are not expected. Do not use any other medication for your nose or sinus without talking to your care team.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Visit your care team for regular checks on your progress. Tell your care team if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse.

This medication may increase your risk of getting an infection. Tell your care team if you are around anyone with measles or chickenpox, or if you develop sores or blisters that do not heal properly.
