Iluvien is a sterile intravitreal implant containing 0.19 mg of the synthetic corticosteroid fluocinolone acetonide. It is in a sustained-release formulation designed for injection into the vitreous of the eye and releases medication at an initial rate of 0.25 mcg per day over 36 months. Key inactive ingredients include a polyimide tube, polyvinyl alcohol, silicone adhesive, and water for injection.

How should I use this medication?

This medication is placed in the eye. It is given by your care team in a hospital or clinic setting.

Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medication?

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:

• Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Blurry vision, vision loss, seeing wavy or bent objects or blind spots with dark, light, or flashing spots
• New or worsening eye pain, redness, irritation, or discharge
• Sudden eye pain or change in vision such as blurry vision, seeing halos around lights, vision loss

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):

• Eye irritation or itching
• Headache
• Sensitivity to light

What should I tell my care team before I take this medication?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• An active eye infection
• Cataracts
• Glaucoma
• An unusual or allergic reaction to fluocinolone, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• Breastfeeding

What may interact with this medication?

Interactions are not expected. Do not use any other eye products without talking to your care team.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Visit your care team for regular checks on your progress. Tell your care team if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse.

After the procedure, be sure to follow all the instructions given to you by your care team. Because you may have blurred vision or a temporary change in vision after the procedure, follow all directions regarding driving or operating machinery.

This medication may cause cataracts or glaucoma, especially with long-term use. You should have regular eye exams while using this medication. Tell your care team if you have changes in your eyesight.
