BeneFIX contains the active ingredient coagulation factor IX in recombinant form. It is a member of the coagulation factor drug class and is formulated as a sterile, lyophilized powder intended for reconstitution and intravenous injection, available in vials with 250, 500, 1000, 2000, or 3000 International Units of factor IX. Key inactive ingredients include sodium chloride, L-histidine, sucrose, glycine, and polysorbate 80. It is intended to help with coagulation processes in the body.
How should I use this medication?
This medication is infused into a vein. It is usually given by your care team in a hospital or clinic setting. It may also be given at home.
If you get this medication at home, you will be taught how to prepare and give it. Let the powder and solution warm to room temperature before use. Follow mixing directions carefully to avoid foaming. Swirl but do not shake the solution. Get rid of any unused portion. Use exactly as directed. Do not take more often than directed. Keep taking it unless your care team tells you to stop.
It is important that you put your used needles and syringes in a special sharps container. Do not put them in a trash can. If you do not have a sharps container, call your pharmacist or care team to get one.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While it may be prescribed for children for selected conditions, precautions do apply.
Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
